It’s almost time to register for the Eighth Annual Best Dam Barbecue Championship!
This year’s event has once again been formally sanctioned by KCBS and remember, we are the barbecue championship that has been designated by the State of Nevada as a State Championship barbecue competition – so our event is a qualifier for the Jack Daniels World Championship Invitational Barbecue AND American Royal World Series of Barbecue!
Event Dates & Location
The Best Dam Barbecue Championship will be held as part of the Best Dam Barbecue Challenge event on Memorial Day Weekend – May 25th and 26th, 2012, at beautiful Bicentennial Park in Boulder City, Nevada.
Event Proceeds
Proceeds from the Best Dam Barbecue go to support a wide variety of local community organizations in Boulder City, for example:
- Boulder City Emergency Aid – The local welfare office and food pantry that assists Boulder City residents in need of financial assistance for rent, utilities and groceries.
- Lend A Hand of Boulder City – The local organization dedicated to assisting seniors remain independent in their home by providing transportation, in-home assistance, companionship and/or equipment loans.
- Every 15 Minutes – A local program coordinated through joint cooperation of several emergency response agencies to re-enacts the aftermath of a fatal automobile collision to educate Boulder City High School sophomores and juniors about the potential consequences of a drinking and/or texting while driving.
- St. Jude’s Ranch for Children – The Boulder City-based campus committed to assisting abused, abandoned and neglected children and families.

Competitions & Prize Distribution
The competition will consist of four main meat competitions, which will include Ribs, Pork, Brisket and Chicken and cash prizes from $350 to $75 will be awarded to First through Tenth Place. For a complete breakdown of prize money distribution, please click here.
The Grand Champion (highest combined points total from all four individual competitions) will be awarded a $2,500 cash prize, as well as the Grand Champion Trophy, Free Entry into next year’s competition and Qualification into “The Jack”.
Reserve Grand Champion (second highest combined points total from all four individual competitions) will be awarded a $1,500 cash prize and the Reserve Grand Champion Trophy.
Nevada State Barbecue Championship
We are also pleased to announce that we will once again be partnering with Smokin’ in Mesquite to create the Nevada State Barbecue Championship. The combined overall points from the Best Dam Barbecue and Smokin’ in Mesquite will be used to crown the Nevada State Barbecue Champion, complete with a trophy and a $3,000 cash prize award!
Teams must compete in both events to be eligible all teams are welcome to compete in both events for a total prize purse distribution of $53,000 in cash!
KCBS Judges
Our KCBS contest representatives this year are Kelly and Kathleen McIntosh. They have assisted with our event from its very first year and always help us to make it a great experience for our competitors and judges. Also, because we believe strongly that a quality competition requires the highest standards in judging, we strive to use 100% KCBS certified judges.
Barbecue Vending
Due to the size of Bicentennial Park and its surrounding streets, we are limited to accepting only 42 competition teams, only 7 of which will be approved to sell barbecue food to the general public. If you wish to apply to be one of the barbecue vendors at this event, please send your request to us by clicking here so that our Vendor Coordinator can consider your application. Remember, you must compete in the Best Dam Barbecue Challenge in order to qualify to be a barbecue food vendor.
Competition Fees & Application
As in past years, the Competition Entry Fee for the Best Dam Barbecue Championship will be $300 and we are pleased to announce that for the first time, we will be offering an Early Registration Discount, making the fee structure as outlined below:
Early Registration (postmarked before February 28th) = $275
Regular Registration (postmarked between March 1st & April 30th) = $300
Late Registration (postmarked after May 1st) = $325
All booth spaces measure 20′ wide x 15′ deep. As in the past, a single additional space may be purchased for $100 and electricity may be purchased for $50.
We will begin accepting competitor applications in early January and the applications will be available on our website (through a “Competitor Application” link in the top menu) as soon as they are available.
